Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
